Yakushima Kusukawa Hodou Vertical Race Information
Yakushima is located approximately 60 km south of the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, and is roughly circular in shape, measuring 28 km east to west and 24 km north to south.
Yakushima is home to a series of peaks over 1,000 meters high, including 1935-meter-high Miyanoura-dake, the highest peak in the Kyushu region, and is also known as the “Oceanic Alps”.
Another characteristic of Yakushima is the presence of multiple types of vegetation on the island, including subtropical vegetation found near the coast and vegetation in the high mountains that also receives snowfall in winter.
This makes it a valuable area with a unique and diverse ecosystem, and in 1993 Yakushima was registered as a World Natural Heritage site.
This year, 2023, marks the 30th anniversary since Yakushima was registered as a World Natural Heritage site. To commemorate this, we will hold the vertical race from Yakushima.
